English Sumo Nationals 2026: This Saturday 28 March | Live Sumo London

The English Sumo Nationals 2026 took place on 28 March at Brunel University, Uxbridge. Winners qualified to represent England at the European Sumo Championships in Stirling, Scotland on 27 June 2026 — the first time the event has been held in Great Britain.

What Is the English Sumo Nationals?

The English Sumo Nationals is an annual tournament where adult men and women living in England compete in amateur sumo wrestling. It is organised by Deep Sumo and sanctioned by British Sumo.

This is not the same as professional sumo in Japan (the kind you see on TV with the yokozuna and the elaborate ceremonies). Amateur sumo follows the same basic rules — push your opponent out of the ring or make them touch the ground — but the competitors are regular people who train in their spare time.

That said, the level is serious. British athletes have competed at World and European championships, and several of the competitors at the English Nationals were genuinely impressive to watch.

If you went to the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2025, this was your next chance to experience sumo live in the UK — and this time, British athletes were the ones competing.

What to Expect

A full day of competitive sumo across multiple weight categories for both men and women. The atmosphere is intense but friendly — grassroots sport, not a polished production.

  • Individual matches across weight categories (featherweight to heavyweight)
  • An open-weight division where size meets technique
  • Athletes from across England competing for national titles
  • A genuine qualifying event for the European Championships

The matches are fast — most bouts last under 30 seconds. But the build-up, the stare-downs, and the explosive starts make each one exciting to watch.

How to Get There
