Basic Meaning and Usage
The 「〜ています」form shows different meanings depending on whether you use intransitive verbs or transitive verbs.
Key Patterns
Pattern 1: Intransitive + ています = State/Result
Pattern 2: Transitive + ています = Action in Progress
Key Characteristics
1. Intransitive + ています = 状態 (State/Result)
Shows the current state or result of something
ドアが開いています = The door is open (state)
電気がついています = The light is on (state)
車が止まっています = The car is stopped (state)
2. Transitive + ています = 動作 (Action in Progress)
Shows ongoing action or action in progress
私がドアを開けています = I am opening the door (action)
私が電気をつけています = I am turning on the light (action)
私が車を止めています = I am stopping the car (action)
3. Pattern
Shows a clear distinction between what you observe and what someone is doing
Intransitive ています → What you see (the result)
Transitive ています → What someone is doing (the action)
Special Note: 〜てあります
〜てあります shows that someone has done something and the result remains (preparation/arrangement)
本が置いてあります = Books have been placed/arranged (by someone)

1. 部屋に入ったら電気がついていた
You enter a room and see the lights are on
2. 駐車場で車が止まっているのを見た
You see cars stopped/parked in the parking lot
3. お店に行ったらドアが閉まっていた
You go to a store and see the door is closed
4. 運転手が車を止めている最中
The driver is in the process of stopping the car
5. オフィスでエアコンがついているのを見た
You see the air conditioner is on in the office
6. 店員が店を閉めている最中
The store clerk is in the process of closing the store
7. 父が今テレビを消している
Father is turning off the TV right now
8. 教室に入ったら窓が開いていた
You enter the classroom and see the window is open
9. リビングでテレビが消えているのに気づいた
You notice the TV is off in the living room
10. 会議室で会議が始まっているのを見た
You see that the meeting has started in the meeting room
11. 図書館で本が置いてあるのを見た
You see books arranged in the library
12. カフェでドアが開いているのを見た
You see the door is open at the cafe
