English Sumo Nationals 2026: Watch Live Sumo in London This March

Want to see live sumo wrestling in London? The English Sumo Nationals 2026 take place on Saturday 28 March at Brunel University, Uxbridge — and you can watch for just £10.

This is a real competitive sumo tournament, not a cultural demonstration. Winners qualify to represent England at the European Sumo Championships in Stirling, Scotland this June.

What Is the English Sumo Nationals?

The English Sumo Nationals is an annual tournament where adult men and women living in England compete in amateur sumo wrestling. It is organised by Deep Sumo and sanctioned by British Sumo.

This is not the same as professional sumo in Japan (the kind you see on TV with the yokozuna and the elaborate ceremonies). Amateur sumo follows the same basic rules — push your opponent out of the ring or make them touch the ground — but the competitors are regular people who train in their spare time.

That said, the level is serious. British athletes have competed at World and European championships, and several of the competitors at the English Nationals will be genuinely impressive to watch.

If you went to the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall, this is your next chance to experience sumo live in the UK — and this time, British athletes are the ones competing.

What to Expect

Expect a full day of competitive sumo across multiple weight categories for both men and women. The atmosphere is intense but friendly — think grassroots sport, not a polished production.

You will see:

  • Individual matches across weight categories (featherweight to heavyweight)
  • An open-weight division where size meets technique
  • Athletes from across England competing for national titles
  • A genuine qualifying event for the European Championships

The matches are fast — most bouts last under 30 seconds. But the build-up, the stare-downs, and the explosive starts make each one exciting to watch.

If you have never seen sumo live, the physicality is striking even at amateur level. The sound of two bodies colliding on the dohyo is something you do not get from watching on a screen.

How to Get There

By Tube: Uxbridge station (Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines) is a 10-minute walk from campus. From central London, the Piccadilly line takes about 50 minutes.

By Car: The university is just off the A40. There is parking on campus (check Brunel’s website for visitor parking information).

By Bus: Several bus routes serve Uxbridge town centre, including the U1, U3, U4, and 222.

The Bigger Picture: Sumo in the UK

Sumo has been growing in the UK over the past decade. British Sumo oversees the national governing body, and there are active clubs in London, Manchester, Belfast, and Edinburgh.

The European Sumo Championships 2026 will be held in Stirling, Scotland on 26–28 June — making this a landmark year for sumo in the UK. The English Nationals on 28 March is the selection event for that championship.

If you are interested in trying sumo yourself, this is a great opportunity to watch, meet the community, and ask about training. Several clubs welcome complete beginners.

Sumo Vocabulary for Japanese Learners

Sumo is more than a sport — it is one of Japan’s oldest cultural traditions, with roots stretching back over 1,500 years. Watching it live, even in an amateur setting in West London, gives you a feel for the ritual, discipline, and raw power that makes sumo unique.

If you are learning Japanese, sumo vocabulary is fascinating:

Understanding sumo deepens your understanding of Japanese culture, history, and language. If you want to learn more Japanese, check out our free JLPT study materials or explore Japanese classes in London.
