What Is Miku Expo?

Miku Expo is a world tour series featuring Hatsune Miku, the virtual singer created by Crypton Future Media. The tour began in Jakarta in 2014 and has since visited North America, Europe, and Oceania.

Hatsune Miku isn’t a hologram in the traditional sense. She’s a Vocaloid, music software that allows anyone to make their computer sing by entering lyrics and melodies. Since her release in 2007, creators have uploaded hundreds of thousands of original songs using her voice, turning her into a global phenomenon that transcends the software itself.

At Miku Expo, she performs as a projected figure on a transparent screen, backed by a live band. The setlist draws from fan-created songs that have become hits in the Vocaloid community.

Who Is Hatsune Miku?

Hatsune Miku is a music software character developed by Crypton Future Media using Yamaha’s Vocaloid technology. Her voice is sampled from Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. Released in 2007, her name means “the first sound from the future.”

Unlike traditional pop stars, Miku is a collaborative creation. Her songs are written by thousands of independent producers who upload their work online. The most popular tracks, voted on by fans, make it into her concert setlists. This grassroots approach has generated a massive catalogue of music spanning every genre.

Miku has collaborated with major brands including Google, Toyota, and Louis Vuitton. She has performed at Coachella, appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, and sold out arenas worldwide. In 2024, she performed at Glastonbury Festival.

Why Go?

Miku Expo is unlike any other concert. The combination of cutting-edge projection technology, a live band, and a setlist curated from fan-created music creates an experience that blurs the line between virtual and real.

For Vocaloid fans, it’s a chance to hear beloved songs performed live. For newcomers, it’s an introduction to a unique corner of Japanese pop culture where the audience and the artist are co-creators.

The O2 show is part of a wider European tour, but London dates for Miku are rare. The last UK performance was at Wembley Arena in 2020.
