Two weeks since she moved in. Every night, there was a sound that bothered Lin. At ten o'clock every night, she could hear a soft "ton, ton, ton" from the flat next door. At first she thought it was cooking. But every night it started at exactly ten and went on for about thirty minutes.「きっと、何かの練習をしているに違いない。」"They must be practising something." Drums? Dancing? Lin tried listening with her ear against the wall, but she couldn't really tell.
One morning, when she went to put out the rubbish, she met the woman from next door. She was a short woman, about seventy.「おはようございます。 Good morning. I'm Lin, from next door."「ああ、どうも。 Oh, hello. There's a bit of noise at night, isn't there? It's not too loud, is it?" Lin hesitated a little, then asked honestly.「あの、毎晩何をしているんですか。」"Um, what do you do every night?" I'm making soba by hand. My late husband loved it, so I practise a little every night."
At ten that night, the "ton, ton, ton" started again. It didn't bother Lin any more. The next day, there was a small bag in front of her door. Inside were some soba noodles, each a slightly different thickness, and a note.「まだ下手ですが、どうぞ。」"It's still not very good, but please have some." When she tried it, it was amazingly delicious. Her husband must have loved it too, Lin thought.
