On Sunday afternoon, Tom went to the post office. He wanted to send a birthday present to his mother back home. The post office was busier than usual, and he waited thirty minutes. Since he had made the effort to go out, he decided to walk round the shopping street on the other side of the station too. He had lived in this town for a year, but he had never once been to the other side of the station.
The shopping street was quieter than he'd expected. There was an old bookshop, a small greengrocer, and a shop with a sign saying "Handmade name stamps". Tom stopped in front of the shop. Every time he hands in documents at the local office, he is asked, "Do you have a name stamp?" And every time, he has answered, "Is a signature OK?"
Welcome!" An old man wearing glasses came out from inside.「はんこを作りたいんですが、外国の名前でも作れますか。」"I'd like to make a name stamp. Can you make one for a foreign name?"「もちろん。 Of course. In katakana, or in kanji." The old man wrote "Tom" on a piece of paper, and next to it he put the characters 富 and 夢.「と、む。 To, mu. 富 as in fortune, and 夢, dream. How's that?" Tom laughed. Money and dreams. Not bad.
He was told the stamp would take a week to make. After leaving the shop, Tom also bought a melon bread at the bakery next door. Eating it as he walked, he found himself back in front of the post office. It was the same road he had walked along an hour before, but the town looked a little different.
