つけっぱなしの電気でんき

ケンとジョンがシェアハウスで一緒いっしょに住すみ始はじめて、三さんか月げつになる。It has been three months since Ken and John started living together in a shared house.二人ふたりは仲なかがいいが、一ひとつだけ問題もんだいがある。They get on well, but there is one problem.ジョンは、電気でんきをつけっぱなしにするのだ。John leaves the lights on.トイレも、台所だいどころも、玄関げんかんも、ジョンが出でかけたあとは家いえじゅうが明あかるい。The toilet, the kitchen, the entrance: after John goes out, the whole house is lit up.

「ジョン、また電気でんきがつけっぱなしだったよ。」"John, you left the lights on again."「ごめん、ごめん。気きをつける。」"Sorry, sorry. I'll be careful."ジョンは毎回まいかいそう言いうが、次つぎの日ひにはまた同おなじだった。John says that every time, but the next day it's the same again.先月せんげつの電気代でんきだいを見みたとき、ケンは声こえが出でなくなるくらい驚おどろいた。When Ken saw last month's electricity bill, he was so shocked he couldn't speak.去年きょねんの冬ふゆより、五千円ごせんえんも高たかかったのだ。It was 5,000 yen more than last winter.「五千円ごせんえんあったら、焼やき肉にくが食たべられるのに。」"With 5,000 yen, we could have had a barbecue dinner."ケンは電気代でんきだいの紙かみを冷蔵庫れいぞうこにはっておいたが、ジョンは気きづかないようだった。Ken stuck the bill on the fridge, but John didn't seem to notice.

ケンは作戦さくせんを考かんがえた。Ken came up with a plan.部屋へやのスイッチの横よこに、一枚いちまいずつ紙かみを貼はったのだ。He stuck a piece of paper next to each light switch.「消けした？」"Turned it off?"次つぎの日ひ、紙かみの横よこに新あたらしい紙かみが増ふえていた。The next day, a new piece of paper had appeared next to it.「消けした！」"Turned it off!"その次つぎの日ひには、また一枚いちまい増ふえていた。The day after that, there was another one.「えらい！」"Well done!"書かいたのはジョンだった。自分じぶんで自分じぶんをほめているのだ。It was John who wrote them. He was praising himself.

それから一いっか月げつ、電気代でんきだいは少すこしずつ下さがった。Over the next month, the electricity bill slowly went down.ところが、今度こんどは別べつの紙かみが貼はられていた。But then, a different note appeared.台所だいどころの水道すいどうの横よこに、ジョンの字じでこう書かいてあった。Next to the kitchen tap, in John's handwriting, it said:「ケン、水みずが出だしっぱなしでした。」"Ken, you left the water running."その下したには、小ちいさな字じで「えらい？」とも書かいてあった。Below that, in small letters, it also said: "Well done?"ケンは何なにも言いえなかった。Ken couldn't say a thing.人ひとのことは、よく見みえるものだ。It's always easier to see other people's faults.
