Invited by a senior colleague from work, Sarah went to an izakaya for the first time. When she went in, the walls were covered with handwritten menus.「焼き鳥」「冷奴」「枝豆」「刺身」……。"Yakitori", "Hiyayakko", "Edamame", "Sashimi"... She had been studying Japanese for two years, but there were so many kanji she couldn't read that she panicked a little.
Order whatever you like." Her senior, Tanaka, said that and went outside to make a phone call. Straight away, a waiter came to take her order. This was a chance to order on her own. She decided not to look things up on her phone. Sarah looked for characters she might be able to read. Next to "sashimi" she saw the character Excuse me, I'd like this '時...', please." The waiter looked a little troubled.「それは『じか』ですね。 That's 'jika'. It's not a dish. It means 'today's price'."
When Tanaka came back and heard the story, he burst out laughing. Then he read the menus one by one and told her what they meant. Hiyayakko is cold tofu. Edamame are beans that go well with beer. That night, Sarah's notebook filled up with new kanji.
On the way home, Tanaka said:「実はね、僕も同じことをしようとしたことがあるんだ。」"Actually, I once tried to do the same thing."「本当ですか。」" Really. At a restaurant in America, I tried to order the 'Market Price' on the menu." The two of them laughed all the way to the station.
