It has been six months since I started working at the florist's in the shopping street. I like the job, but I tend to forget small things. Shibazaki, the manager, gave me a little notebook.「書いておけば、あとで思い出せますから」"If you write things down, you can remember them later."
One morning, the leaves of the potted plant at the back of the shop were drooping. I was sure I had watered it, and yet the soil was bone dry. When I opened the notebook, nothing was written in the space for the previous day. I had been a little short of sleep lately, and my head had not been working properly. I watered it at once, but the leaves did not come back straight away. Shibazaki moved the pot near the window and said that one day would do it no harm.
From that day on, I fixed the times for watering. Nine in the morning and five in the evening. In the notebook I write down only the time I did it. When I am in a hurry, I tend to lose track of whether I have done it or not. If I look at what I have written, I do not end up doing the same thing twice. A week later, the leaves of the plant began to lift a little at a time.
Apparently an elderly woman from the neighbourhood left that pot behind when she moved house.「あの人、来月この辺に戻ってくるはずですよ」と柴崎さんが言った。"She should be coming back to this area next month," Shibazaki said. Hearing that, I added one more line to my notebook. Look at the pot at the back every day. The flowers in the shop will be sold sooner or later, but that pot is not for sale. Even on days when I feel a bit worn out, I do not want to forget to water it. The writing in my notebook grows a little at a time.
