リナは駅の前のコンビニでアルバイトをしている。Rina works part-time at a convenience store in front of the station.毎週日曜日の朝、背の高いおじいさんが店に来る。Every Sunday morning, a tall old man comes into the shop.おじいさんはいつも新聞とパンを買う。He always buys a newspaper and some bread.帰るときは、いつもにこにこして「ありがとう」と言う。When he leaves, he always smiles and says "thank you".でも、ときどきチョコレートを一つ買うこともある。But sometimes he buys a bar of chocolate as well.お孫さんにあげるのかな、とリナは思っていた。Rina assumed he was giving it to his grandchildren.
ある日曜日、おじいさんが来なかった。One Sunday, the old man didn't come.次の週も来なかった。He didn't come the next week either.リナは少し心配になった。Rina started to worry a little.「店長、あのおじいさん、来ないことがあるんですか。」"Manager, does that old man ever not come?"「いや、今まで一度もなかったよ。」"No, never before now."
三週目の日曜日、おじいさんがやっと来た。On the third Sunday, the old man finally came.「娘の家に行っていたんですよ。」"I've been staying at my daughter's."おじいさんは新聞とパンとチョコレートをレジに置いた。He put a newspaper, some bread and a bar of chocolate on the counter.「お孫さんへのおみやげですか。」とリナが聞いた。"Is that a present for your grandchildren?" asked Rina.おじいさんは小さい声で答えた。The old man answered in a quiet voice.「いいえ、私が食べるんです。でも、妻がこの店に来ることもあるから、ないしょにしてくださいね。」"No, it's for me. But my wife sometimes comes to this shop too, so please keep it a secret."
