It has been two months since Yusuke started his part-time job at the bakery in front of the station. His work is the till, restocking the shelves and cleaning the shop. The service manual he was given on his first day ran to twenty pages. How to greet customers, how to hand over the bag: it was all written down. Yusuke had it memorised in three days.
As long as you learn the manual, serving customers isn't difficult. Yusuke genuinely believed that. In fact, he was the fastest in the shop at clearing the queue at the till. Mr Yamane, the manager, praised him too, saying, "You work quickly." But when he saw senior staff talking at length with regulars, he felt it was a waste of time. As long as you're quick, customers ought to be satisfied.
One rainy evening, an elderly man came into the shop. He stood in front of the bread shelves without moving for more than ten minutes. There were only thirty minutes left until closing time. Yusuke asked him twice whether he had decided. The man gave a small nod, but in the end left without buying anything. The next day, and the day after, the man came at the same time and left in the same way.
On the fourth day, Mr Yamane stood beside the man and spoke to him quietly.「何かお探しですか。」"Is there something you're looking for?" The man answered with a troubled look.「妻に頼まれたパンの名前を、忘れてしまって。"I've forgotten the name of the bread my wife asked me to get. All I know is that it's round with something inside." Without laughing in the slightest, Mr Yamane laid out three round buns from the shop on a tray.
What the man chose was an anpan, a bun filled with sweet bean paste. The next week he came again and bowed, saying, "That was the right one." Since then, twice a week, he has come in and bought the same bun without fail. Yusuke had always thought that customers were pleased as long as you handed things over quickly.「接客は、速ければいいというものではないよ。」"Serving customers isn't simply a matter of being fast, you know." Mr Yamane said this and patted Yusuke lightly on the shoulder. These days, Yusuke too is gradually learning not only the regulars' faces but those of occasional customers as well. The manual doesn't go that far.
