Shota, who had moved to Tokyo for a job, started living in a share house converted from an old family home. There were five residents, including Shota. Their ages and jobs were all over the place. A hairdresser, a postgraduate student, a nurse and a chef.
Not used to living with others, Shota worried about everyone else whatever he was doing. Was his shower too noisy? Was he using the kitchen for too long? The moment anything bothered him even slightly, he would apologise: "Sorry." He apologised so often that he couldn't have said himself how many times a day it was.
One morning, when he apologised as usual, Mr Matsumoto, who had lived there the longest, laughed and said:「翔太くん、そんなにいちいち謝ることはないよ。"Shota, there's no need to apologise for every little thing. This is everyone's home, so you can relax a bit more." Mr Matsumoto was a chef in his forties, and the residents relied on him like an older brother. Even though Shota understood this in his head, he couldn't shake off the habit of apologising.
One evening about a month later, when Shota came home from work, there was a note stuck to the fridge.「翔太くんへ。" I ate the pudding on the shelf, thinking it was mine. I'm really sorry. To make up for it, I'll cook dinner tomorrow.
Shota burst out laughing. That pudding was the cheapest one at the convenience store. What's more, its best-before date had been the day before. Shota picked up a pen and added a line under the note.「松本さん、謝ることはないですよ。"Mr Matsumoto, there's no need to apologise. But I'm looking forward to dinner."
The next evening, the table was laid with a feast far too lavish to be fair exchange for one pudding. All the residents gathered, and it was lively until late that night. That was the first day Shota got through without saying "sorry" even once.
