最初さいしょの部屋へや

結婚けっこんして二年目にねんめの春はる、直人なおとと真理まりは、もう少すこし広ひろい部屋へやに引ひっ越こすことにした。In the spring of their second year of marriage, Naoto and Mari decided to move to a slightly bigger flat.二人ふたりとも家いえで仕事しごとをすることが増ふえ、今いまの1LDKでは狭せまくなったのだ。They were both working from home more, and their one-bedroom flat had become too cramped.直人なおとの机つくえは寝室しんしつの隅すみに押おし込こまれ、真理まりはいつも台所だいどころのテーブルでパソコンを開ひらいていた。Naoto's desk was squeezed into a corner of the bedroom, and Mari always worked on her laptop at the kitchen table.

最初さいしょに見みに行いったのは、駅えきから歩あるいて十二分じゅうにふんの古ふるいマンションだった。The first place they viewed was in an old block of flats a twelve-minute walk from the station.日当ひあたりはいいが、築三十年ちくさんじゅうねんで、エレベーターもない。It got plenty of sun, but the building was thirty years old and had no lift.「一軒目いっけんめで決きめるのはもったいないね」と、二人ふたりはほかの物件ぶっけんも見みることにした。"It'd be a shame to settle on the first one," they said, and decided to look at other places too.

それから三さんか月げつ、二人ふたりは週末しゅうまつのたびに不動産屋ふどうさんやを回まわった。For the next three months, they did the rounds of estate agents every weekend.駅えきに近ちかい部屋へやは家賃やちんが高たかい。Flats near the station had high rents.新あたらしい部屋へやは収納しゅうのうが少すくない。New flats had little storage.広ひろい部屋へやは、真理まりの会社かいしゃから遠とおい。Spacious flats were a long way from Mari's office.見れば見るほど、どの部屋へやにも欠点けってんが見みつかった。The more they looked, the more faults they found in every flat.条件じょうけんを表ひょうにまとめて点数てんすうをつけてみたが、かえって迷まようばかりだった。They tried putting everything in a table and scoring each one, but it only left them more undecided.

二十軒にじゅっけん以上いじょう見て回ったあげく、ある晩ばん、二人ふたりは大おおげんかをしてしまった。After viewing more than twenty places, the two of them ended up having a huge row one evening.直人なおとが「もう、どこでもいいよ」と言いってしまい、真理まりを怒おこらせたのだ。Naoto had said, "I don't care where we live any more," and made Mari angry.

しばらくして、先さきに口くちを開ひらいたのは真理まりだった。After a while, it was Mari who spoke first.「ねえ、一軒目いっけんめの部屋へや、覚おぼえてる？」"Hey, do you remember the first flat?"直人なおとはうなずいた。Naoto nodded.あの部屋へやの窓まどからは、近ちかくの小学校しょうがっこうが見みえた。From the window of that flat, you could see a nearby primary school.見学けんがくしていたとき、ちょうどチャイムが鳴なって、二人ふたりで顔かおを見合みあわせて笑わらったのだった。While they were looking round, the school bell had rung, and they had looked at each other and laughed.「あのとき、なんだか楽たのしかったよね。」"It was kind of fun, that moment, wasn't it?"表ひょうの点数てんすうでは、一軒目いっけんめは真まん中なかくらいだった。In their table, the first flat had scored somewhere in the middle.それでも、二十軒にじゅっけんの中なかで二人ふたりが笑わらった部屋へやは、あそこだけだった。Even so, of all twenty flats, it was the only one where they had laughed.

さんざん悩んだあげく、二人ふたりは最初さいしょに見みた部屋へやに決きめた。After all that agonising, they chose the first flat they had seen.幸さいわい、部屋へやはまだ空あいていた。Luckily, it was still available.不動産屋ふどうさんやの担当者たんとうしゃは、「実じつは、そういうお客様きゃくさまは多おおいんですよ」と言いって、にっこり笑わらった。The estate agent smiled and said, "Actually, lots of our customers do that."
