In the eight years since graduating, Yuki has worked at the same advertising agency. She doesn't dislike her job. She has good colleagues, and last year she was even made team leader. But somewhere in her heart, she has always wanted to study design in Italy one day.
Three years ago, Yuki opened a bank account to save up for studying abroad. Little by little, the money built up. By now there's roughly enough for a year's tuition and living costs. Even so, she just couldn't take the first step. The reason was always the same.「今は大事なプロジェクトの途中だから、辞めるわけにはいかない。」"I'm in the middle of an important project right now, so I can't possibly quit." As soon as one project finished, the next one began. And every time, Yuki told herself the same thing.
One evening, as she was working late, her manager, Mr Mori, came over to speak to her.「最近、元気がないね。何かあった?」"You've seemed a bit down lately. Is something wrong?" Yuki hesitated, but told him honestly about her dream of studying abroad. Then at the end she added, "But I can't let the team down."
Mr Mori was silent for a while, but eventually spoke quietly.「この会社で、プロジェクトが終わらない時期なんて、一度もなかったよ。"There has never been a time at this company when there wasn't a project on. When I was young, I said exactly the same thing, and gave up on graduate school in America." Yuki looked up in surprise. She had never known that Mr Mori, always so calm and seemingly devoted to nothing but work, had a past like that.「後悔はしていない。"I don't regret it. But sometimes I wonder. What would have happened if I had gone back then."
That night, when she got home, Yuki checked the balance of the account. Then, for the first time, she read the language school brochure she had left unopened for so long all the way to the end. The application deadline was three months away.
