From April, Misaki's company was going to stop letting people work from home. Many of the staff objected, but it was the president's decision, so they had no choice but to go along with it. Misaki, too, would be commuting on packed trains for the first time in two years. She would have to leave home at seven again, and think about clothes and make-up.
On her first day back in the office, Misaki was a little nervous. What worried her most was Mr Tajima, who was on the same team. Whenever she asked him about work on the chat, his reply was only ever "Understood" or "I'll check". No emojis, no words of thanks. Misaki had long suspected that he didn't like her. Once, after she had carefully written a long report, the only reply was "Understood", and she didn't sleep a wink that night.
In person, however, Mr Tajima was nothing like she had imagined. He was a gentle man in his fifties, and the moment he saw Misaki, he smiled happily and said, "We finally meet!" At lunchtime, he took her to a good set-meal restaurant nearby. He seemed to be on good terms with the woman who ran the place, and his usual set meal arrived without him even ordering.
Sorry my replies on the chat are always so short," said Mr Tajima, scratching his head.「実は、キーボードが大の苦手でしてね。"The truth is, I'm hopeless with a keyboard. If I try to type anything long, it takes me half an hour."
When she said, "You could have just phoned me," Mr Tajima replied with a straight face, "I'd heard young people don't like phone calls." For two years, behind every curt "Understood", Mr Tajima had been battling away with his keyboard.
The train home was, as expected, crowded. To be honest, she still found the commute a pain. Even so, as she held on to the strap, Misaki thought back over the day. She had to admit that she was glad she had come in.
