While tidying out the cupboard, Kazuya pulled an old camera from the back. He had bought it ten years earlier for his daughter Hinata's school entrance ceremony. He used it once that day and never again; it had sat in its box ever since. He pressed the switch, but the camera made no sound at all.
On his next day off, Kazuya called at a camera shop in the neighbouring town. Mr Fujimoto, the owner, picked the camera up and nodded.「これはいいカメラですよ。 This is a good camera. It will work if we change the battery."「十年使っていないのに、大丈夫でしょうか。」"It hasn't been used for ten years. Will it really be all right?"「使わなくても、中は思ったよりきれいですよ。」"Even unused, the inside is in better condition than you would think."
When the battery went in, the lens moved with a small whirring sound. Mr Fujimoto said, "There's a film inside, you know." He had left a ten-year-old film exactly where it was.「現像しましょう。 Let's have it developed. But please don't get your hopes up too high."
A week later, Kazuya collected an envelope from the shop. What came out of it was a photograph of Hinata under the cherry blossom. There were only five pictures in all. When he showed them at home, Hinata, now at secondary school, said "How embarrassing" and looked again and again. His wife laughed and said, "You should have had them developed years ago."
Since then, Kazuya has taken the camera out every time he has a day off. A hobby that almost ended after a single use is now his weekly pleasure. The photograph of the cherry blossom from ten years ago still hangs in the hall. Every time he passes it, Kazuya remembers a spring he will never forget.
