At the beginning of April, Maki was called in by her section head.「来週の歓迎会、司会をお願いできないかな。」"Could I ask you to host next week's welcome party?" The idea that she would be the host had never even crossed her mind. She was no good at speaking in front of people, and this was only her second year in the section.
Do you really think I can do it?"「やってみれば、できないことはないよ。」"If you give it a go, it's not as if you can't." With that, her section head handed her last year's running order. On the sheet, everything from the opening greeting to the closing words was set out in detail.
Back at home, Maki read the sheet over and over. It was not that she couldn't learn it all by heart, but she decided to work from the sheet on the day. There was a slot for each of the three new staff to say a few words. About those three, Maki knew nothing but their names. The next day she went round their desks and got them talking. Once she had asked, the words for introducing them came to her naturally.
On the day, Maki's hands were cold as she stood at the entrance of the restaurant. Even so, once the microphone was in her hand, her voice was steadier than she had expected. Each time she introduced one of the three, there was a ripple of laughter.「小西さんは、休みの日に一日中パンを焼くそうです。」"Apparently Ms Konishi spends her whole day off baking bread." At the end of the party, her section head gave a small nod from his seat.
On the way home, one of the new staff walked alongside her.「司会が初めてだったなんて、信じられません。」"I can't believe that was your first time hosting." Maki laughed and shook her head.「あの紙がなかったら、何も言えませんでした。」"Without that sheet I wouldn't have managed a word." Doing it again next year would not be impossible, she thought.
