Nobuo is not good at English. In the thirty-odd years since he left school, he has never properly studied it. Whenever a foreigner spoke to him in the street, he had always hurried past. That day too, just as he came through the ticket gate, a young couple showed him a map. Almost as a reflex, Nobuo said, "No English."
The two of them looked troubled and pointed at the map again. At their fingertip was the name of a hot spring about thirty minutes from there. Looking at his watch, he had fifteen minutes until his next train. Nobuo did know where the bus for that hot spring left from. But he had no confidence whatsoever about explaining it in English. He started to walk on, and then stopped.
The woman, still holding a large bag, looked close to tears. He couldn't see that and pretend he hadn't. Nobuo went back and took one of their bags. Then, saying only "Come", he set off. Even without a common language, he could tell they would follow him. From the north exit of the station, the bus stop is about five minutes away.
He pointed at the number of the stop and traced the figures on the timetable with his finger.「ツー。 Two. Two, o'clock." The two of them nodded again and again, and thanked him over and over. As they parted, the man took a small badge out of his jacket pocket and pressed it into Nobuo's hand. Nobuo stayed at the stop until the bus left. Through the window, the two of them were waving broadly. A little embarrassed, Nobuo waved back.
As a result, Nobuo was thirty minutes late for his reunion. As soon as he sat down, unable to keep it to himself, he began explaining why he was late. His friends roared with laughter: "You, giving directions in English?" All the same, he felt oddly good about it. The next week, Nobuo put a map of the city in his bag. He bought a vocabulary book too; even at his age, it can't be impossible to learn. In front of the station, travellers from abroad are steadily increasing in number. The next time someone speaks to him, he won't be able to walk quietly past.
