Chihiro only started learning the piano after she turned forty. When she was a child, there was no piano at home. She still clearly remembers the first time she touched a keyboard, at a friend's house. Last autumn, when work had eased off a little, Chihiro knocked on the door of a small music school behind the station.「せめて一曲だけでも、最後まで弾けるようになりたいんです。」"I'd like to be able to play at least one piece, right through to the end."
Her teacher was a woman in her sixties called Mrs Mochizuki. When she heard what Chihiro wanted, she nodded quietly.「一曲、いいですね。 One piece. That's a fine goal. Right, let's decide which one." They chose a quiet piece that everybody knows. The score was harder than she had expected, and it took her a month just to learn the first four bars. Whenever she tried to move her right and left hands together, her fingers stopped dead.
In weeks when work was busy, she couldn't find any time to practise at all. Even so, she had decided to sit down at the piano for at least ten minutes. Ten minutes doesn't get you very far. Still, when several days went by without her touching the keys, her fingers soon refused to move.「一年や二年でうまくなるもんじゃないですよ」と、先生は笑って言った。"It isn't the sort of thing you get good at in a year or two," her teacher said with a laugh.「でも、続けていれば、必ずどこかで景色が変わります。」"But if you keep going, the view will change at some point, I promise."
When spring came, there was talk of the school's recital. Adult students could play on stage too, if they wanted to. Chihiro hesitated. She wasn't good enough to play in front of people. And yet, she thought, it wasn't as if she couldn't play it. On the morning of the application deadline, Chihiro wrote her name on the form and handed it to her teacher.
On the day of the recital, Chihiro's hands were shaking. Partway through, her fingers stopped once. Her mind went blank, and she couldn't even look towards the audience. Even so, she somehow made it to the final note. When she looked up amid the applause, Mrs Mochizuki was nodding at her from the front row.「せめて一曲でいい」と思っていたはずなのに、帰り道ではもう次の曲を考えていた。She was supposed to have wanted just one piece, and yet on the way home Chihiro was already thinking about the next one. Deciding to call in at the sheet music shop, Chihiro set off in the opposite direction from the station.
