Sano Yumi bought her bicycle in the year she started university. She has been riding it for eight years, so bits of it are getting old. Since last month, the back tyre has lost its air almost at once.「そろそろ新しいのを買うべきかな。」"Maybe I ought to buy a new one soon." Yumi went to ask about it at the small bicycle shop by the station.
Mr Morita, a man with white hair, came out from the back of the shop. He looked at the bicycle and then pressed the tyre with a finger.「これ、いい自転車だね。 This is a good bike. Where did you buy it?"「大学の近くの店です。 At a shop near my university. It isn't there any more, though."
Can it be mended? Or would I be better off buying a new one?"「買う前に、まず中を見てみるべきだよ。」"Before you buy anything, you should have a look inside it first." Mr Morita took the tyre off and drew out the inner tube. When he put it into water, small bubbles came out in two places.「ほら、ここ。 There, look. A piece of glass or something got in."
The repair cost a tenth of the price of a new bicycle.「せっかく八年も乗ってきたんだから、まだまだ大丈夫。」"You've gone to the trouble of riding it for eight years, and it's still fine." Mr Morita even sorted out the noise the brakes were making. How long a bicycle lasts, it seems, varies a great deal depending on how it is used.「雨の日は、帰ってからこうやって拭いておくといいよ。」"On rainy days, wipe it down like this when you get home."
On the way back the bicycle felt as light as a completely different machine. Before throwing something away, you ought to ask somebody about it first. The next day Yumi called in again and asked them to mend the basket as well. Mr Morita laughed and said, "Watch out for glass this time."
