駅前えきまえの本屋ほんや

ルーカスの町まちでは、去年きょねんから駅えきの工事こうじが続つづいている。In Lucas's town, work on the station has been going on since last year.新あたらしいビルが建つのに伴って、駅前えきまえの風景ふうけいも変かわっていった。As the new building went up, the scene in front of the station changed too.ルーカスが気きになったのは、線路せんろのそばの小ちいさな本屋ほんやだ。What bothered Lucas was the small bookshop beside the railway line.店みせには、窓まどのそばに古ふるい木きのいすが一ひとつ置おいてある。In the shop there is one old wooden chair by the window.

ルーカスは勉強べんきょうに疲つかれると、その店みせに行いく。Whenever Lucas gets tired of studying, he goes there.店主てんしゅの石田いしださんは、いつも「どうぞ」といすを指さす。Mr Ishida, the owner, always points at the chair and says, "Please, sit down."買かわない日ひがあっても、石田いしださんは嫌いやな顔一かおひとつしなかった。Even on days when he bought nothing, Mr Ishida never once looked put out.「本ほんは、急いそいで選えらぶものじゃないからね。」"Books aren't something you should choose in a hurry."

十一月じゅういちがつ、入いり口ぐちに「移転いてんのお知しらせ」の紙かみがはられた。In November, a notice about moving was put up by the door.工事に伴って、この場所ばしょは来年らいねんなくなるらしい。With the building work, the site was apparently going to disappear next year.ルーカスは、ますます寂さびしくなった。Lucas felt sadder and sadder about it.「石田いしださん、お店みせはどうなるんですか。」"Mr Ishida, what will happen to the shop?"「さあね。この年としで新あたらしい場所ばしょを探さがすのは大変たいへんだ。」"Who knows. Looking for a new place at my age is hard work."

二月にがつ、ついに店みせのシャッターが閉しまった。In February the shutters finally came down for good.あの店みせが町の人によってどれだけ大切たいせつにされていたか、よく分わかった。Lucas knew very well how much that shop had been treasured by the people of the town.春はる、新あたらしいビルの二階にかいに広ひろくて明あかるい本屋ほんやが入はいった。In spring, a bright, spacious bookshop moved into the first floor of the new building.

エスカレーターを上あがると、聞きき覚おぼえのある声こえがした。As Lucas came up the escalator, he heard a voice he recognised.「いらっしゃい。久ひさしぶりだね。」"Welcome. It's been a while."石田いしださんが、レジの横よこに立たっていた。Mr Ishida was standing beside the till.窓まどのそばには、あの木きのいすが置おいてあった。And there by the window stood that old wooden chair.「ビルの人ひとに、いすだけは持もってきてくれと言いわれてね。」"The people from the building told me to be sure and bring the chair."

人によって選ぶ本は違うが、いすに座すわりたい気持きもちは同おなじらしい。The books people choose depend on the person, but the wish to sit in that chair seems to be the same.後うしろには、小学生しょうがくせいが二人ふたり並ならんでいた。Behind him, two primary-school children were standing in line.町まちが変わるのに伴って、生うまれるものもあるようだ。As a town changes, it seems, some things are born as well.
