In the shed at Tatsuya's house there is a bicycle his father rode for twenty years. It is dark green, with a wooden box fixed to the rack. Three years have passed since his father hurt his leg and stopped riding it. With a move settled for the spring, Tatsuya began clearing out the shed. He wheeled it outside meaning to throw it away, but his hand stopped when he touched the tyre.
As a child he had been carried on that rack all the way to the river. His father's tools had always been in the box. Old as it was, he still found it hard to throw away. Tatsuya pushed the bicycle to the repair shop behind the station. The man in the shop is called Mr Kajiwara, and is nearly seventy.
Mr Kajiwara looked at the bicycle from the side and squeezed the brakes.「よく手入れされていますね。」“This has been well looked after.” Then he pinched the rear brake cable between his fingers.「ここが古い。 “This part is old. As it is, it could happen that it won't stop on a downhill.”
“It can happen that parts cannot be found, but for this model they are still available.” If it was to be repaired, he said, the brakes, tyres and pedals should all be replaced. Altogether it came to about half the price of a new bicycle. Mr Kajiwara wrote the figures on a piece of paper and said, “You won't be able to decide right away.” Tatsuya could indeed not bring himself to decide there and then.
He left saying he would think it over for a week, and that night he rang his father. His father heard the figure and was quiet for a moment.「好きにしていい。 “Do as you like. Only, could you keep that box?” His father had made the box himself, and his name is written in one corner. Tatsuya remembered that name, and hesitated no longer.
The next Saturday he asked the shop to do the repairs. The bicycle he collected ten days later made no sound as he rode.「この自転車なら、あと十年は走り得ますよ。」“A bicycle like this could well run another ten years.” Mr Kajiwara's words sounded exaggerated, but they made Tatsuya happy. The road where he has moved to runs along the river. When he rides with his bags in the box on the rack, the old sound of the river comes back to him.
