吉永さんは月に一度、近所の人と編み物の会をしています。Once a month Mrs Yoshinaga holds a knitting group with people from her neighbourhood.今まではだれかの家でしたが、人が増えてきました。Until now it was at somebody's house, but the numbers have grown.それで、文化センターの部屋を借りることにしました。So she decided to book a room at the culture centre.紙には「申し込みは電話またはまどぐちで」と書いてありました。The notice said, "Apply by telephone or at the counter."
土曜日の午後の部屋を頼みました。She asked for a room on Saturday afternoon.しかし、土曜日は三か月先まで空いていません。However, Saturdays were booked up three months ahead.係の人は「平日の夜または日曜日の朝なら空いています」と言いました。The member of staff said, "A weekday evening or a Sunday morning is free."平日の夜は来られない人がいるので、日曜日の朝にするしかありませんでした。Some of the members could not come on a weekday evening, so she had no choice but to take Sunday morning.
会の人たちに手紙を書きました。She wrote a letter to the members of the group.「来られない人は、電話またはメールで教えてください。」"If you cannot come, please let me know by telephone or email."三日の間に、六人から返事が来ました。Within three days, six people had replied.
日曜日の朝、八人が集まりました。On Sunday morning, eight people gathered.いつもより二人多いです。That is two more than usual.「朝のほうが、頭がはっきりしていますね。」"Your head is clearer in the morning, isn't it."「昼からは買い物にも行けますし。」"And you can go shopping in the afternoon too."一人のおばあさんが、お茶を持ってきてくれました。One of the older ladies brought tea for everybody.
「ところで、来月もこの部屋ですか。」"By the way, is it this room next month as well?"吉永さんは、もう次の申し込みをしていました。Mrs Yoshinaga had already put in the next application.今度は、三か月分まとめて予約しました。This time she booked three months in one go.朝の会は、こうして続いています。That is how the morning group has carried on.
