Every morning Mrs Mukai rides her bicycle to the station. One Monday the air had gone out of a tyre. And so that day she walked to the station.
As she walked, a narrow road she did not know caught her eye. From the far end of it came the smell of freshly baked bread. A small bakery was open from six in the morning. She was worried about her train time, but she went in.
In the shop only six kinds of bread were laid out. However, every one of them was a lovely shape and smelled good. That morning Mrs Mukai had not eaten any breakfast. And so she bought two bean paste buns. When she ate one on the train, it was still warm.
At work she told someone in her section about the shop. She said it was cheap and that it tasted good too. What is more, it is handy because it opens early in the morning. At lunchtime three people came and asked her to draw them a map.
The next day Mrs Mukai had the tyre repaired. However, she still walks in the mornings. That is because on a bicycle she does not go down that narrow road. And so there is always bread in Mrs Mukai's bag.
