In twenty years in a publisher's proofreading department, Murai had gone through countless manuscripts. His job was to find typos and factual errors and point them out to the author. Even with a great master, a mistake is reported as a mistake. That was the principle drummed into him by his seniors when he was new.
That autumn, what landed on Murai's desk was the new work of a renowned novelist. Still writing past eighty, the author was well known for the beauty of his prose. The manuscript was handwritten in fountain pen, every character carefully formed. The editor in charge had told him that the master's manuscripts barely needed any red ink.
The problem lay in a scene near the end. It was the scene where the protagonist steps off at his home town station and watches "the sun setting beyond the platform". The station in the novel really exists, and when he checked the map, what the protagonist would see from where he stood was the eastern sky. It was a direction in which the sun could not possibly set.
Murai hesitated. A novel is not a record of fact, and the author might have written it that way on purpose. But some readers were bound to know that station. At the same time, he felt somewhat reluctant to query a single line by such a great writer. Determined to see for himself, Murai travelled to the station on his day off at his own expense.
In the evening, standing on the platform, he watched the sun set behind the mountains at his back, as expected. But when he turned his eyes down the line, Murai caught his breath. The windows of an old hospital on the hill opposite were reflecting the setting sun, glowing as if on fire. None of the other passengers seemed to notice the light at all.
Instead of writing "error", Murai added a small note in pencil in the margin.「ホームから見て西は山側。 From the platform, west is on the mountain side. However, I confirmed on site that the setting sun is reflected in windows on the hill opposite, and looks like a sunset."
A few weeks later, the proofs came back. The passage in question had been altered only slightly.「夕陽が沈んでいく」が、「夕陽が燃えている」に変わっていた。"The sun setting" had become "the sunset blazing". And in the margin, in the author's hand, were the words:「母が最期を迎えた病院です。 That is the hospital where my mother spent her final days. Thank you for finding it."
For some time, Murai could not take his eyes off that line. However gifted the writer, memory sometimes shifts the facts just a little. Correcting that shift, Murai thought, must never mean erasing the memory itself.
