Last spring Mizuho brought an old sewing machine home from her mother's house. Ever since her mother moved to a smaller house, nobody had used it. Mizuho had never once touched a sewing machine. All the same, when getting rid of it came up, she found herself saying "I'll use it at ours".
For six months the machine sat in the corner of the room under a cloth. In the autumn holidays she finally took the cover off. When she threaded it and set it going, the needle moved but the fabric did not.
When she looked up the model name, she found it was over thirty years old. When she phoned a shop nearby, they told her to bring it in. She put it in her bicycle basket and took it there.
The man in the shop opened the lower part and looked inside.「糸くずですね。 Thread dust. It had packed down and stopped the movement." When he cleaned it out with a thin tool, the sound suddenly grew lighter.「使ってはじめて調子が分かりますから、何か縫ってみてください。」"You only find out how it runs by using it, so do sew something."
Back home, she sewed a small bag out of a kitchen cloth. Sewing in a straight line is harder than it looks. Only when she did it herself did she see how straight her mother's stitching had been. The finished bag was a little crooked, but the top closed properly.
The next weekend Mizuho took the bag to show her mother. Her mother turned it inside out and looked hard at the stitching.「こっちから縫うと、もっと楽よ。」"If you sew from this side, it's much easier." It had been a long time since she and her mother had talked about sewing machines. Ever since it was mended, the machine has moved from the corner of the room to the top of the desk.
