On Sunday morning five-year-old Daichi came to Nao's house. Because her sister was at work, Nao was to look after him until midday. Daichi had been a quiet child until last year, but lately he wants to do everything himself. Shoes, bag, whatever it is, he hates anyone else touching it.
Auntie, milk." As Nao was about to pour it into a cup, Daichi reached out.「ぼくがやる。」"I'll do it." He held the heavy carton in both hands and tipped it slowly. Half the milk went into the cup; the rest spread across the table.
Nao went to fetch a cloth, but Daichi wanted to wipe it himself. Even if it took time, it was probably better to let him. Daichi wiped the table over and over with his small hands. When he had finished, he looked up at Nao, pleased with himself.
Before noon they set off for the park, but at the gate was a notice: "Closed today due to rain." Daichi stood in front of it for a long time without moving.「読めないよ。」"I can't read it."「雨だから、今日は遊べないって書いてあるの。」"It says that because of the rain we can't play today." Daichi pressed his lips together and then gave a small nod.
On the way home, Daichi wanted to carry the umbrella himself. The umbrella was too big and knocked against his shoulder with every step. Even so, he never once handed it over to Nao. When they got home he folded it himself and stood it in the entrance. The shape was crooked, but the umbrella stood without falling.
When her sister came to collect him, Daichi pointed at the umbrella in the entrance.「ぼくがやった。」"I did that." Even when it does not go well, Nao thought, the face of the person who did it is different.
