Just before his fortieth birthday, Koji left the bank where he had worked for eighteen years. Ever since he was a child, he had loved making things out of wood. After talking it over with his family many times, he had decided to train at a small furniture workshop in Gifu.
The master of the workshop was a quiet craftsman in his sixties. For the first three months, all Koji was allowed to do was clean, carry materials and look after the tools.
After about six months, he was finally allowed to make a small chair. Koji stayed late at the workshop every night, planing the wood again and again. Looking at the finished chair, the master said just one thing.「初めてにしては、悪くない。」"Not bad, for a first go." Koji couldn't tell whether he had been praised or not. He had been told before that he was good with his hands for a former banker, but he wasn't at all satisfied himself. The legs weren't quite the same length, and it wobbled a little when you sat on it.
One day, an old chair in the corner of the workshop caught Koji's eye. It was the chair the master sat on every day during his breaks. Looking closely, he saw that the legs were slightly different lengths and the seat wasn't flat either.「親方、この椅子、ずいぶん古いですね。」"This chair's very old, isn't it?" The master replied, looking a little embarrassed.「俺が最初に作った椅子だ。"It's the first chair I ever made. Forty years ago. My own master laughed and said it was dreadful."
Koji, surprised, looked at the chair again. It wobbled, yet the seat was polished to a shine by all the years.「毎日使っているんですね。」"You use it every day, don't you?"「椅子は、人に座ってもらってはじめて椅子になるんだ。」"A chair only becomes a chair once someone sits on it."
That evening, Koji took his chair home. The next morning, when he went into the kitchen, his wife was sitting on it drinking coffee.「少しがたがたするけど、なんだか落ち着くね」と妻は言った。"It wobbles a bit, but it's somehow comfortable," she said.
