There is a small set-meal shop near my office. From the outside it looks old, and at first I hesitated to go in. Sakaguchi, a colleague, told me it was cheap but the food was good. An expensive restaurant is not necessarily a good one, in Sakaguchi's view.
One lunchtime, the two of us went in. When I ordered the grilled fish set, the bowl of rice was bigger than I had expected.「多めですけど、少なめにもできますよ」とおかみさんが言った。"It's a generous portion, but we can do a smaller one," the landlady said. I answered that it would be fine. As a result, I left about half of it and could not finish it all. Sakaguchi had a second helping of rice and polished off every grain. A large portion is not necessarily a welcome thing, I thought at that moment.
The next week, I went to the shop again. This time, when I ordered, I tried saying, "A small portion of rice, please." The landlady smiled and brought me a smaller bowl. Apparently a lot of people are too embarrassed about leaving food to say anything.「言ってくれたほうが、こちらも助かります」"It's easier for us as well if you tell us." That day, instead of ordering a large portion, I added an extra side dish.
These days I go to the shop twice a week. Instead of buying something at a convenience store, I walk the five minutes to the shop. Eating out changes the feel of my afternoon's work a little, too. A cheap restaurant does not necessarily mean the food is worse. Even the old entrance no longer bothers me. Next week I think I will try the simmered fish set.
