It was in spring that Chinatsu moved into this block of flats. One morning a week later, there was a brown cat sitting on her balcony. When she opened the window, the cat did not so much run away as shift along a little. From that day on, it came every morning.
Chinatsu asked the landlady at the bin store.「あの猫は、どなたの猫ですか。」"Whose cat is that one?"「ああ、ちびね。 Ah, that's Chibi. He's Mr Nomura's cat, from flat three-oh-one." When she met Mr Nomura, however, she got a different answer.「うちの猫というより、アパートのみんなの猫ですね。」"He's less my cat than everybody's cat, really."
Chibi, it seems, goes round all the flats every day. He naps in the student's room on the ground floor and gets fish on the first.「散歩というより、見回りですよ。」"It's not so much a walk as an inspection round." One person had written, "It was raining today, so he was waiting under an umbrella."
Chinatsu decided to write in it as well. She began to notice the small changes from one morning to the next. It felt less like watching the cat than like watching her own life.
When summer came, Chibi stopped appearing. Worried, Chinatsu called at flat three-oh-one for the first time.「暑いときは、階段の下が涼しいんです。」"When it's hot, it's cool under the stairs." She went and looked, and there was Chibi, asleep under the stairs. Chinatsu found herself saying he was sweet enough to photograph.
The notebook is already on its second volume. She used to think living alone was lonely, but it is this cat that makes it fun. This morning too, Chibi was waiting on the balcony at the same hour as ever.
