遅刻ちこくの理由りゆう

朝八時五十分あさはちじごじゅっぷん。ノアは駅えきの階段かいだんを走はしっていた。8:50 in the morning. Noah was running up the station stairs.大事だいじな会議かいぎは九時くじからだ。今日きょうは絶対ぜったいに遅おくれられない。The important meeting started at nine. He absolutely could not be late today.ところが、ホームに着つくと、電車でんしゃが止とまっていた。But when he reached the platform, the train had stopped.アナウンスによると、信号しんごうの故障こしょうで、あと二十分にじゅっぷんは動うごかないらしい。According to the announcement, because of a signal fault, it wouldn't move for another twenty minutes.

ノアはまず、課長かちょうにメールを書かくことにした。First of all, Noah decided to write an email to his manager.「申もうし訳わけありません。電車でんしゃが遅おくれていますので、遅刻ちこくします。」"I'm sorry. The train is delayed, so I will be late."書かいてから、少すこし考かんがえた。これでは短みじかすぎる気きがする。After writing it, he thought for a moment. This felt too short.先週せんしゅう、日本語にほんごの先生せんせいに習ならった表現ひょうげんを思おもい出だした。He remembered an expression his Japanese teacher had taught him last week.「〜ものですから」は、理由りゆうを丁寧ていねいに説明せつめいするときに使つかう、と先生せんせいは言いっていた。The teacher had said that "〜ものですから" is used to explain a reason politely.ノアは書かき直なおした。Noah rewrote it.「大変たいへん申もうし訳わけありません。信号しんごうの故障こしょうで電車でんしゃが止とまっているものですから、会議かいぎに二十分にじゅっぷんほど遅おくれてしまいます。」"I am terribly sorry. As the train has stopped because of a signal fault, I will be about twenty minutes late for the meeting."

送おくったあとで、ノアは不安ふあんになった。After sending it, Noah started to worry.ノアは、言いい訳わけが決して上手なほうではない。Noah is by no means good at making excuses.課長かちょうに怒おこられるかもしれない。His manager might tell him off.

九時二十五分くじにじゅうごふん、ノアは会議室かいぎしつのドアを開あけた。At 9:25, Noah opened the door of the meeting room.「遅おそくなって、申もうし訳わけありません。」"I'm very sorry I'm late."課長かちょうはノアを見みて、にっこりした。The manager looked at Noah and smiled warmly.「ノアさん、メール、よく書かけていたね。『ものですから』なんて、新人しんじんではなかなか使つかえないよ。」"Noah, that email was very well written. Even new Japanese staff hardly ever use 'mono desu kara'."会議室かいぎしつのあちこちから、小ちいさな笑わらい声ごえが聞きこえた。Quiet laughter came from here and there around the room.ノアはほっとして、席せきに着ついた。Noah felt relieved and took his seat.

会議かいぎのあと、隣となりの席せきの先輩せんぱいが小ちいさな声こえで聞きいた。After the meeting, the senior colleague next to him asked quietly:「さっきのメールの書かき方かた、今度こんど教おしえてくれない？"Could you teach me how you wrote that email?実じつは私わたし、明日あしたは歯医者はいしゃに寄よるものですから、ちょっと遅おくれるの。」The thing is, I'm stopping by the dentist tomorrow, so I'll be a bit late."
