Once a month, a children's canteen is held at the town community hall. Since last year I have been helping in the kitchen there. What got me started was being asked by Harada, the woman who runs it.「土曜日以外は、いつもお仕事でしょう」と言われ、断る理由が見つからなかった。"You're at work every day except Saturday, aren't you?" she said, and I could not find a reason to refuse. Now that I had taken it on, I could not give it up halfway.
On my first day, just chopping the onions took me an hour. Apart from the knives, I had no idea where any of the tools were kept. All the same, the number of children coming to eat keeps growing. Last spring it was about ten, but now there are days when it goes past thirty.
Sakura, who is at high school, comes straight over as soon as school finishes. Besides cooking, she also helps the younger children with their homework.「人手が足りない日は、私が二階も見ます」と自分から言う。"On days when we are short-handed, I'll watch upstairs as well," she offers of her own accord. One Saturday, we realised we did not have enough rice. Harada made call after call and got some from a rice shop nearby. The rice balls we made with it were a little firmer than usual. Even so, the children ate every single one.
After the clearing up, Harada made us all some tea.「手伝ってくれる人も、少しずつ増えてきました」"The number of people helping is slowly growing too." The work does not get any easier, but the number of names I know keeps growing. Next month we are going to make curry. Chopping the onions is still my job. It no longer takes me a whole hour. The Saturday kitchen is slowly becoming a place of my own.
