In this town there is one theatre company that has kept going for twelve years. Calling it a company is one thing, but it has only four members. Two office workers, one hairdresser and one school administrator. For rehearsals they hire the tatami room at the community hall six times a month. They perform once a year, using the stage at the autumn culture festival.
The leader, Mr Makabe, is an office worker of forty-eight. He did drama at university, and moved to this town in his thirties. At first he wrote the scripts alone and invited acquaintances to read them through with him. Over twelve years, people joined and people left, and it came down to the present four.「稽古といったところで、半分は雑談ですよ」"Calling it a rehearsal is one thing, but half of it is just chatting." Mr Makabe laughs about it, but he has hardly ever missed a session.
The company has only one rule. Whatever the weather, on a rehearsal day they gather in the tatami room without fail. Even on a day when only one of them can come, that one person reads the script.「二人ならまだしも、一人で立ち稽古はできませんけどね」"Two would be one thing, but you can't do a walk-through on your own." Ms Nagumo, the hairdresser, said so and laughed as if it amused her.
Last autumn, a problem arose three weeks before the performance. The culture festival schedule changed, and the time they could use the stage was halved. An hour-long play had to be cut to thirty minutes. Mr Makabe rewrote the script in two nights. What he cut was the long scene he liked best.
On the day, about sixty people filled the seats. For a town culture festival, that is not a bad number. The play was about a family who had moved in next door and a long-standing resident. Because it had been cut to thirty minutes, the story moved along faster than before. Afterwards, a member of the audience came up to speak to Mr Makabe.「短くて物足りないどころか、ちょうどよかったですよ」"Far from feeling too short, it was just the right length."
Those words, he says, frightened him slightly. If halving the length had improved it, what had all the years before been?「十二年やってきたといったところで、まだこの程度です」"Even saying we have kept at it for twelve years, we are still only at this level." At the party afterwards, Mr Makabe said so and scratched his head.
This spring, two people applied to join the company. One is a high-school student, the other a man past retirement age. If the number rises to six, the kind of play they can do will change too. Whatever the reason, Mr Makabe has decided not to turn away anyone who comes. On the day of the first rehearsal, six cushions were laid out in the tatami room.「二人ならまだしも、六人なら立ち稽古もできますね」"Two would be one thing, but with six we can do a walk-through too." One remark from Ms Nagumo set the tatami room laughing.
