On the edge of the town there is a pear orchard that has run for three generations. It is now looked after by two brothers, the elder Takafumi Inamoto and the younger Eiichi. The orchard is about a hectare in size, with more than two hundred trees. Thinning blossom in spring, bagging fruit in summer, harvesting in autumn: there is hardly any rest.
The brothers' characters are completely different. In contrast to the elder, who talks a great deal, the younger says barely ten words a day. The elder says that meeting people is part of the work, and never misses a cooperative meeting. The younger is among the trees from morning until the sun goes down. While she was alive, their mother used to call them the mouth and the hands.
Three years ago, the elder brother proposed something new. Rather than selling their pears only through the market, they should have an outlet of their own. The younger said nothing, but opposition was written on his face.「今のやり方で、食べていけるだろう」"We can make a living the way we do it now." It was a full ten days after the idea came up before he said even that.
The elder brother built a small farm stall beside the orchard. It was a shed of bare boards, wide enough for two tables. In the first year, its takings came to less than two per cent of the whole. In contrast to his brother, who was spending more days away from the orchard, the younger one's workload did not change. The two brothers spoke to each other even less than they had before.
What changed came in the autumn of the second year. A customer at the stall took a liking to the small pears the younger brother grew. The elder had been setting out fruit too misshapen to send to the market. The person who bought those pears came again the following week with the family. That a confectioner in the city would ring up specially to buy them was something neither brother had expected. The younger one, too, was apparently genuinely astonished at the time.
Last year, the stall grew a little bigger. Its takings now come to about a third of the whole. In contrast to the large pears, the small fruit are limited in number. The elder talks about prices and boxes, the younger about the trees. There may be the odd argument, but they have never fallen out over how the work is divided.「あいつの梨は、数が減りこそすれ、味が落ちることはない」"His pears may fall in number, but the flavour will never fall." That, apparently, is what the elder brother told the people at the cooperative.
This spring, the younger brother stood at the stall for the first time. The elder had come down with a fever and taken to his bed, and there was nobody else. In a single day he seems to have exchanged words with more than ten customers. That night, the younger brother came to his brother's room and said this.「お客は、木のことを聞きたがる」"Customers want to ask about the trees." It was agreed that next year they would set aside days to show people round the orchard. That his silent brother should put forward an idea himself was, to the elder, the greatest surprise of all.
