On a street a little way from the station there is a second-hand bookshop with a narrow frontage. The owner, Mr Tsuzuki, has been selling books in this spot for forty years. One day in spring, a man in his sixties came into the shop out of breath.「お忙しいところを、すみません」"I'm sorry to trouble you when you're busy." Saying that, the man took an old photograph from his bag.
What it showed was a red seal stamped on the endpaper of a book. It was his father's bookplate seal, carved with his name and the small shape of a bird. After his father died, the collection of some three hundred books had been taken away in one lot by a dealer. Among them, he said, was one volume he wanted back more than anything. It was a botanical guide, a book he had opened again and again as a child.
Mr Tsuzuki looked at the photograph for a while and then tilted his head.「三百冊が一度に出たのなら、もう何軒にも分かれていますよ」"If three hundred books went out at once, they'll have been split between any number of shops by now." Even if he went round every shop from today, the chances of finding it were not high. The man asked all the same to be told anywhere worth trying. Mr Tsuzuki wrote down the names of four fellow dealers in the city and handed them over.
If only I had kept just one of them." As he was leaving, the man said it in a small voice. Letting go of all his father's books had been a decision made at the time of a move, he said. If only he had thought about it a little then, he repeated. Mr Tsuzuki said nothing, opened the door and saw the man out.
About two weeks later, a call came to Mr Tsuzuki from one of the other dealers. A shop in the suburbs, he said, had several books with a bird-shaped seal in them. Mr Tsuzuki closed his own shop for half a day and went out to that shop. On the bottom shelf, a single old botanical guide was left. On the endpaper was the same red seal as in the photograph.
Mr Tsuzuki bought that one volume in and took it back to his own shop. When he telephoned the man, he began with a slightly awkward apology.「お休みのところをお電話して、失礼します」"Forgive me for calling you on your day off." There was silence at the other end of the line for a little while.
The man came to the shop before opening time the next day. When he took the book, he opened and closed the endpaper over and over.「探したところで出てこないと思っていました」"I thought that even if I looked, it would never turn up." Mr Tsuzuki left the price exactly as he had paid for it. Even if he had added a margin, he felt, it would mean nothing in the case of this book. On his way out, the man bought another guide from the shop's shelves.「今度は、売りませんよ」"This one I won't sell." After the sound of the door closing, the shop was quiet again.
