A community orchestra in a provincial city held a concert to mark its fiftieth anniversary. Most of its members spend their days working as teachers, office workers or farmers. They had rehearsed once a week in the music room of the community centre, but it was ten years since they had last played in a large hall.
The oldest member was Mr Sakamoto, a cellist. One of the founding members, he turned eighty-two this year. When the young conductor Mano first conducted the orchestra, Mr Sakamoto's playing had given her quite a headache. However many times she told him, his notes alone would drag ever so slightly behind. Eventually Mano gave up trying to get him to correct it.
The programme for the anniversary concert was Dvořák's Ninth Symphony, "From the New World". The second movement contains a melody everyone knows. In Japan it's loved as "Going Home", the tune played across towns in the early evening. As a child, Mano too used to stop playing and head home at the sound of this tune.
On the day of the concert, the hall was full. Among the audience were members' families and faces of former players. At the end of the first movement, Mano let out a small breath. So far it had gone better than in rehearsal.
The second movement began, and the cor anglais played that melody. At that moment, Mano felt the atmosphere in the audience shift. Several older members of the audience were swaying gently with their eyes closed. Their swaying was slightly slower than the tempo in the score.
With a start, Mano looked over at Mr Sakamoto. As usual, he was drawing his bow a little behind the beat. But today, that lag matched the swaying of the audience exactly. The people of this town had been listening to this orchestra's "Going Home" for fifty years. Mano slowed her baton just a fraction.
When the last note faded, the hall fell silent for a moment. The next instant, thunderous applause broke out, as if to bring the house down. Looking as though he might burst into tears at any moment, Mr Sakamoto bowed deeply, still holding his instrument.
After the concert, Mano went up to Mr Sakamoto.「今日の第二楽章、坂本さんのテンポに合わせました。」"In the second movement today, I followed your tempo." No, I wasn't behind. My body just remembers the tempo of the previous conductor." It was only at the after-party that Mano learnt that conductor had been Mr Sakamoto's late wife.
