When a senior colleague offered to hand over his allotment plot, Toda hesitated a little. He had never worked soil in his life. Even so, after hearing all about it properly, he decided to take it on. “Just watch the water and the weeds,” said his colleague, leaving an old hoe behind.
In the spring of that first year, Toda bought three books. How to sow seed, how much fertiliser to use: it was all written down. He read them and thought he had understood, but standing in the plot his hands would not move. The elderly woman in the next plot could not bear to watch and spoke to him.「うねは、もう少し高くね。」“Make your ridges a bit higher.”
When he banked the soil up as told, it drained so well he could hardly believe it was the same plot. That summer he got just six tomatoes. The cucumber leaves turned yellow and the plants gave up halfway. Even so, he could not forget the taste of tomatoes he had grown himself.
In the second year, with the old lady teaching him, he looked at the state of the soil before sowing. Simply by putting the planting back a week, insect damage dropped sharply. By autumn he had reached the point of lifting thirty daikon. Toda divided them into bags and took them in to his colleagues.
In the spring of the third year, the old lady said she was taking a break from her plot.「となりの区画も、見てもらえないかしら。」“Could you look after the plot next door as well?” Toda reached the point of tending two plots. He gets up at five and waters before leaving for work. On his days off he is between the ridges all day.
“You're keener on that than on your job,” his wife laughed. Five years on, twelve kinds of vegetable stand in Toda's plot. He has reached the point of sharing out seedlings in spring and handing produce round the neighbourhood in summer. At the entrance to the allotments there is a noticeboard for new users.
A notice went up there reading “Advice day for beginners”. It was not the allotment office that wrote it. It was Toda. He wanted to pass on to someone the things books alone had not taught him. On Sunday morning, a young couple were standing in front of the noticeboard. Toda put down his hoe and walked slowly over to them.
