The delivery area of the Toi post office includes three hamlets no car can reach. Yoshimura has had that area for twenty-two years. He leaves his little van in the car park at the pass and does the rest on foot. It is a round that takes half a day, up and down the ridge from house to house. Even without looking at the address, he can usually tell which house and which person a letter is for.
In the furthest hamlet, only four houses are still lived in. Mrs Umehara, who is eighty-eight, lives alone in one of them. Whenever he brings the post, Yoshimura always calls out to her. If there is no reply, he looks in through the window at the back. Even without anything being said, it had become a kind of rule.
Once a month, a letter reaches Mrs Umehara from a distant town. The sender is the son who left the hamlet forty years ago. He is not one for telephoning, so whatever he has to say always comes by letter. Mrs Umehara reads each letter twice on the veranda. Once aloud, and then once in silence. Yoshimura has watched her read like that many times from outside the veranda.
At the beginning of November, the road over the pass gave way. Rain the night before had brought the hillside down. No vehicle could pass, and he was told repairs would take ten days. That day, there was a letter for Mrs Umehara in Yoshimura’s bag. It was the once-a-month letter. Precisely because he wanted to deliver that one letter, Yoshimura took the long way round on the mountain path. He crossed two streams and reached the hamlet after three hours. He lost the path twice on the way, and his shoes filled with water. Mrs Umehara was waiting for the post on the veranda.「今日は来ないと思っていた」と、梅原さんは言った。“I thought you would not come today,” she said. Yoshimura wiped away the sweat with the towel round his neck and simply laughed.
The letter, it seems, had a line saying he would come home at the end of the year. From that day, Mrs Umehara began cutting the grass in her garden. A neighbour offered to lend a hand.「息子に見せんがため、自分でやりたいんです」“In order to show it to my son, I want to do it myself.” Mrs Umehara straightened her back and gave that answer. Even without being told, Yoshimura understood how she felt.
In mid-December, the road over the pass was mended three days ahead of schedule. On a morning late in the year, Yoshimura climbed up to the hamlet with a bundle of New Year cards. An unfamiliar car was parked in front of Mrs Umehara’s house. The man who came out of the door was close to sixty.「母が、いつもお世話になっていると」“My mother says you always look after her.” Yoshimura put the New Year cards straight into his hands. On the way back, looking down at the hamlet from the ridge, he saw smoke rising from every house.
