The Sansuiso in Yumoto is an old inn with only twelve rooms. Haru Odagiri, the landlady, took the inn over from her mother in the spring. She is thirty-two, and sitting at the front desk still does not feel settled. Ikeuchi the cook, two maids and a student helper are the whole staff.
The town’s autumn festival fell on the long weekend in October. The three-day weekend, coupled with the festival, filled the inn for the first time in ten years. The telephone rang without stopping, and turning people away became the job.「不慣れなこととて、お電話を長くお待たせいたしました」“Being unused to this, I kept you waiting a long while on the telephone.” Haru said that and bowed with every call.
On the evening of the first day, something unexpected happened. A pipe on the first floor leaked, and three rooms could no longer be used. The plumber could not come until the following morning. Eight guests had already arrived for those three rooms. Haru thought for about five minutes at the desk, then slid open the doors of the great hall.
The great hall is a fifty-mat room used only for banquets. Its windows onto the garden are large, and the moon shows well. Haru carried in eight sets of bedding and made partitions with folding screens.「急なこととて、このような形になりました」“As it was so sudden, this is the shape it has taken.” In front of the guests, Haru bowed deeply.「お代は半分で結構です」“Half the usual rate will be quite enough.” An older gentleman looked slightly taken aback.「ここに泊まらせてもらえるんですか」“We are allowed to sleep in here?”
At night, the moon rose between the trees in the garden. Through the windows of the hall came the sound of the festival drums. The guests sat up on their bedding, and for a while nobody made any move to sleep. Ikeuchi made small rice balls and brought them in as a late snack.「広間を開けたのも、月を見ていただきたいと思ってのことです」“I opened the hall out of a wish for you to see the moon.” When Haru said that, the guests looked at one another and laughed. The festival lanterns, coupled with the moonlight, made the garden pond glow white.
The next morning, the pipe was mended without trouble.「至らぬこととて、ご不便をおかけしました」と、はるは朝食の席でもう一度詫びた。“Falling short as I did, I put you to inconvenience,” Haru apologised again at breakfast. The eight guests, rather than moving to rooms, announced that they would stay another night in the hall.「あんな夜は、めったにありませんから」“Nights like that do not come often.” Haru did not know how to answer. Ikeuchi the cook put in a word from beside her.「女将、宿帳に大広間と書いておきましょう」“Landlady, let us write the great hall in the register.” By winter, the Sansuiso had made the shared great hall an official way to stay. The price per person is low, and it is offered only on nights when the moon can be seen. These days, it is this hall that fills up first.
