In the kitchen of the community hall there is a dining room that opens only twice a month. On the second and fourth Saturdays, from half past eleven until two. Anyone may come in; it is three hundred yen for adults and free for children. It was started by four people from the neighbourhood, housewives and a retired teacher.
Ms Miyashita, who thought of it, had attended the cookery class at the hall for years. Three years ago, she says, the idea came to her while clearing up after a class. A kitchen as good as this was being used only a few times a month.「設備の話はさておき、まず一回やってみませんか」"Setting the equipment aside, why don't we just try it once?" That one remark from Ms Miyashita set things moving.
Fourteen people came the first time. The menu was only pork soup, rice balls and pickled cucumber. Including the clearing up, it took nearly four hours.「もうけの話はさておき、続けられる形にしないと」"Setting aside any question of profit, we have to make it something we can keep up." Afterwards, the four of them sat round a table in the kitchen and talked it over at length.
From the second time, they changed the way they did it. The menu was limited to three dishes, and the preparation finished on the evening before. They borrow the hall's crockery and buy only the containers for taking food home. Applications are taken by telephone or postcard, up to the week before. They decided to take people who simply turn up on the day as well, up to twenty.
After a year, the faces of those who came began to change. At first it was mainly families with children. Before long, older people living alone grew more numerous. Now there are young people who come on their days off too. The role of this dining room had come to be more than simply serving meals.
What matters most is what happens around the kitchen. While the vegetables are being cut, it gets settled who will cut the grass in the neighbourhood. Children spread out their homework, and older people peer over at it. Those who come to help are not limited to experienced cooks; there are school and university students too.「献立はさておき、人が来てくれるかが心配なんです」"The menu aside, what worries me is whether anyone will come." Even now, Ms Miyashita says, she cannot sleep the night before they open.
This summer, refurbishment of the hall left the kitchen unusable for three months. The four of them borrowed the kitchen of a nearby temple and carried on. Even with the change of place, the number of people coming did not fall.「場所の話はさておき、休まないことが大事だと思いました」"Setting aside the question of where, I felt that not taking a break was what mattered." That is how Ms Miyashita looks back on it.
In autumn the kitchen came back to them, renewed. Two more sinks had been added, and a large rice cooker installed. More than forty people gathered on the first occasion. On the registration sheet, a new box was made for applying by telephone or email. At the end of a table, a high-school student was teaching a primary pupil the times tables.
