On the floor above a shopping street there is a shop that deals only in second-hand instruments. The owner, Mr Onishi, used to play the trombone in an orchestra. Climb the stairs and gold-coloured brass instruments hang across a whole wall. Every one has changed hands before; there is not a single new instrument.
Last spring, a girl in school uniform came up the stairs on her own. She had just joined the wind band, she said, but there were not enough instruments. The school's instruments are allotted to the third years first, in order. All that came round to a first year were old instruments full of dents.「新しいものはおろか、まともに音の出るものも足りません」"We don't have anything new, let alone enough instruments that play properly." Saying that, the girl looked up at the trumpets on the wall.
Mr Onishi took one down from the shelf and set it on the table. It was a Japanese instrument from about forty years ago, its lacquer worn away completely. The girl looked at the price tag and fell silent for a moment. Thirty thousand yen is not a sum a high-school student can find out of pocket money.「音といい作りといい、この値段では、これがいちばんです」"In both its sound and its build, at this price this is the best there is." Mr Onishi showed no sign of pressing her to buy.
The girl began coming to the shop once a week. She did not buy an instrument. She would call hello from the bottom of the stairs, look at the instruments for half an hour and go home. Mr Onishi carried on with his work in silence. On the repair bench he would pull out a slide, or press out a dent.
At the end of summer, the girl brought an envelope. It was money she had saved by delivering morning papers for three months. Mr Onishi did not take the money. Instead, he pushed the old trumpet on the table across to her.「これは、値段もさることながら、吹き手が長く決まらなかった楽器です」"The price of this one aside, it is an instrument that went a long time without finding a player." The sound was hard, he said, but the air moved through it well.
In the end, the girl paid half the sum and worked off the rest by helping out. On Saturday afternoons she cleans the shop and polishes the instruments. In both the way she held the cloth and the way she handled a screw, the girl's hands changed little by little. Mr Onishi began showing her the steps of a repair as well.
At the autumn competition, the girl sat in the second chair. For a first year to be placed at the front was apparently unusual. Mr Onishi listened from towards the back of the hall. The instrument's sound was certainly hard. Even so, in both the shape of the notes and the timing of the pauses, she seemed a different person from three months before.
This spring, the girl moved up into the second year. Her help at the shop still continues on Saturdays. Instruments brought in by younger members of her band have started to line up on Mr Onishi's repair bench.「演奏もさることながら、この子は直すほうに向いているかもしれません」"Her playing is impressive, but this one may be even better suited to mending them." That is what Mr Onishi tells his customers.
