On the lower reaches of the Aratani river, a single ferry boat still survives. It is a five-minute crossing linking the town with the hamlet on the far bank. There is one bridge upstream, but on foot it means a thirty-minute detour. Kashiwagi, the boatman, took over from his father and has worked the boat for twenty-eight years. The fare is a hundred yen for adults and nothing for children.
The ferry runs under a promise made when the town merged with the village. Whether or not anyone boards, it leaves every half hour from six in the morning until six in the evening. There are rainy days, and there are days without a single passenger.「誰も来ないのに出すんですか」と、新しい役所の担当者に聞かれたことがある。“You run it even when nobody comes?” a new official at the town hall once asked him. Kashiwagi answered briefly.「待っている人がいるかもしれませんから」“Because someone might be waiting.”
By spring, only three children were crossing to go to primary school. Without this ferry, the children would face that thirty-minute detour. Kashiwagi had written the three names and their boarding times in his notebook. The eldest was Chiaki, in her sixth year. Chiaki never missed the ten past seven crossing. She was also the sort of child who helped hold the rope until the boat pulled away from the bank.
One morning in June, the river was wrapped in thick fog. Neither the trees on the far bank nor the posts of the landing stage were visible. Kashiwagi stood on the landing stage, unable to move. A morning like that is what it means to be unable to set out however much you want to. He rang the school and waited for the fog to lift. It was past eight before the shape of the far bank finally showed faintly through. When he brought the boat in, the three of them were waiting on the landing stage, huddled together. Far from being cross, Chiaki said, “We could tell from the sound.” Even through the fog, she said, the noise of the engine had reached them.
At the end of summer, a proposal to end the ferry came up at a city meeting. The figure presented was an average of fourteen users a day. Kashiwagi was called in, opened his notebook and spoke.「数字が増えようが増えまいが、この五分を必要とする人はいます」“Whether or not the figures go up, there are people who need these five minutes.” The room went quiet. The official in charge said, “Without local voices, this is not something we can decide.” The conclusion was that they would look at it again in three years.
In autumn, Chiaki wrote about the ferry for her leavers’ anthology.「霧の朝、音だけが聞こえた」という題だった。The title was “A foggy morning, and only a sound.” The piece was reprinted in the town newsletter, and a few more people came to see the ferry. Kashiwagi still sends the boat out every half hour, whether or not a passenger comes. On the post of the landing stage, the old iron ring from his father’s day is still there.
