In front of Kiyo Sugimoto’s house there is a small unmanned stall. It is nothing more than vegetables set out on a wooden shelf with a wooden money box beside them. Radishes, cabbages and cucumbers all carry the same label of a hundred yen a bag. For thirty years, Kiyo has been laying out her vegetables at six every morning. This year she turns eighty-four. The little roof over the shelf was put on by her late husband twenty years ago.
From around last autumn, the contents of the box stopped adding up. The vegetables were going, yet less than half the money was there. Taking advantage of there being nobody about, someone seemed to be taking produce without paying. Yuta, her grandson, said they should put up a camera. Kiyo set down her teacup and slowly shook her head.「見張られて買うものじゃないよ」“Vegetables are not something you buy under watch.”
Even so, the losses grew worse. Ten bags laid out in the morning were gone by midday, with only two hundred yen in the box. On the pretext of the summer holidays, Yuta came and stayed at his grandmother’s for days. In truth, he wanted to keep an eye on the stall. At midday on the third day, a small truck pulled up. The man who got out supplied vegetables to a roadside market nearby. He loaded several bags into the truck and put just a hundred yen in the box. Taking advantage of the owner being elderly, he was carrying off a considerable amount. Crouched behind the shelf, Yuta could not find his voice.
That night, Yuta told his grandmother. Kiyo drank her tea in silence, and then spoke.「あの人は、去年から畑を広げすぎたんだよ」“That man took on too much land last year.” Taking advantage of the stall being unmanned, he had apparently been buying cheap and selling on. When Yuta said they should go to the police, Kiyo raised a hand to stop him.「まず、顔を見て話すよ」“First I will talk to him face to face.”
The next morning, in spite of the pain in her back, Kiyo stood by the shelf from before six. The truck came at its usual hour. The man saw Kiyo and froze a little.「おはよう。 The cabbage is good today.” Kiyo spoke to him in exactly the tone she used with her regular customers. The man took three bags and pulled a thousand-yen note from his wallet. Keep the change, he said, then bowed and drove away.
After that, the box began to add up. In autumn, the man came once more. He asked whether he could leave some taro from his own field there. On the shelf now, Sugimoto’s vegetables sit beside that man’s taro. The money box is still the same wooden box as ever. Counting the coins that gather at the bottom is still a job for after dark. In the end, Yuta never did put up a camera.
