The Asagiri Club is an amateur baseball team that has kept going for twenty years. They play twice a month on the pitch on the city riverbank. There are fourteen players, ranging from their twenties to their fifties. The equipment is shared, kept in a big canvas bag in a storage shed. The one entrusted with the key to that shed was Taki, in his second year.
Taki runs and hits well enough, but keeping track of things is simply beyond him. In the opening game in spring he forgot the balls and borrowed from the other side. In the second game he failed to bring two of the bases. In the third he lost the key to the bag, and in the end the shed would not open at all. Hamada, the captain, folded his arms and looked at the sky.
「去年も同じことがあって、今年はこの始末だ」“The same thing happened last year, and this year we end up like this.”「忘れ物にもほどがあるぞ」“There is a limit to how much you can forget.” One of the older players said it in a low voice. Taki bowed his head and had nothing to say back. They played that day with equipment borrowed entirely from the other team. On the way home, Hamada called Taki over to a bench by the river.「鍵を持つ役は、代わってもらうか」“Shall we have someone else take over the key?” Taki thought for a moment and asked to be allowed one more go.
From the next week, Taki began carrying a small notebook. He writes the name and number of each item twice, before and after the game. He photographed the contents of the bag and even fixed how things should be arranged. The key hangs in one set place by his front door. Even so, in June he went and left a bat behind again.「同じことを繰り返すとは、いいかげんにもほどがある」“Repeating the same mistake is careless beyond limits.” He wrote that himself and stuck it on the cover of the notebook.
By the end of summer, Taki was on his third notebook. The counts hardly ever come out wrong now. More than that, Taki now handles repairs to cracked bats and the replacing of old balls. The shed was tidier than it had ever been before. On the morning of the autumn tournament, Hamada stopped in front of the shed. On the shelf there were even small gloves to lend to children who came to watch.
In the second round, the opposing team arrived without balls for the umpire. While the official was at a loss, Taki produced a fresh box from his bag.「予備が三箱あります」“I have three spare boxes.” The other manager bowed and said it helped more than anything else could have. They lost the match, but the bus home was anything but quiet. Hamada announced that from next year there would be two equipment managers. One is Taki, the other a university student who has just joined. Two keys now hang from the same ring. Taki fastened a small bell to that ring.
