There are only a handful of craftsmen in the whole country who paint Mt Fuji on the walls of public bathhouses. Chinatsu Wakabayashi is one of them. She trained under a master for ten years, and it is now five years since she went out on her own. Because the steam damages them, these painted murals last a few years at most. It is work done on the assumption that it will disappear, as Chinatsu always explains to people.
In early spring, a call came from Matsu-no-yu, a bathhouse in the old part of town. The owner, Mr Ogura, barely finished his greeting before coming out with it.「うちは九月三十日をもって、店を閉めることにしました」"As of the thirtieth of September, we've decided to close the place." Chinatsu found herself gripping the receiver more tightly. The request was for her to paint a new mural on the wall of a bathhouse that was closing.「三か月で消えてしまう絵ですよ」と、千夏は念を押した。"The painting will be gone in three months, you know," Chinatsu said, making sure he understood. Mr Ogura's answer was brief.「だからこそ、いちばんきれいな顔で終わらせてやりたいんです」"That's exactly why. I want to let it finish with its best face on."
On a closed day in June, Chinatsu set up her stepladder in the bath. The old mural had been painted by her master twenty years before, and the blue had faded away completely. When it came to covering it over in white, her hand did stop for a moment. Waiting for the undercoat to dry, Chinatsu began to paint a new sky. Through the glass door of the changing room, several neighbours were peering in.
Miss, is it the same Mt Fuji every time?" A boy who looked like a primary school pupil called out to her from beside the attendant's seat.「同じに見えても、雲の形も裾野の色も、少しずつ違うんだよ」"It may look the same, but the shape of the clouds and the colour of the lower slopes are a little different each time." The boy was listening without really listening, his eyes wandering up towards the ceiling.「どうして、どこの銭湯も富士山なの」"Why is it Mt Fuji at every bathhouse?" While Chinatsu was struggling for an answer, Mr Ogura cut in from the side.「うちの常連さんにはね、本物を見たことがない人が何人もいたんだよ」"Among our regulars, you know, there were plenty who'd never seen the real thing."
On the last day of business, a queue formed outside Matsu-no-yu before it even opened. An elderly woman soaking in the water looked up at the mural and sighed.「まあ、なんと立派なことか」"My word, how splendid it is." She said she had bathed here on the night she came to the town as a bride. At the counter, Mr Ogura bowed to every single customer on their way out.「本日をもちまして、五十八年の営業を終わります」"As of today, we bring fifty-eight years of business to a close."「釜の火も、今日をもって落とします」"The fire under the boiler goes out today as well." Beyond the steam, the white peak of Mt Fuji slowly clouded over.
After the new year, a letter arrived for Chinatsu from Mr Ogura. A young couple were going to convert the Matsu-no-yu building into a launderette and café. The wall of the bathroom, it seemed, was to be left standing just as it was. The photograph enclosed showed a white room lined with washing machines, and Mt Fuji at the back of it. At the end of the letter he had added these words.「消える前提で描かれた絵が、いちばん長く残りそうです」"The mural that was painted to disappear looks like lasting the longest of all."
