In a small village along the river lives a man named Ichimura, who moved there three years ago. He is one of those brought in from outside, employed by the town office to work on rural revitalisation. His post runs for three years, and this spring is the last of them. He had finally learned every resident's face and name. The seasons had simply gone by without anything much to show for it. At a village meeting one evening, Ichimura steeled himself and put forward an idea. He wanted to hold a mud volleyball tournament in one of the fallow paddies.
For a moment, the room went quiet. The first to speak was Mr Kubota. Getting on for eighty, he is the finest rice grower in the village.「田んぼは、遊び場じゃない」"A paddy field isn't a playground." That was all he said, and he went home ahead of the others. Ichimura hardly slept that night.
The following week, Ichimura went to Mr Kubota's house to apologise. He went three times before Mr Kubota would hear him out. On the fourth visit, Mr Kubota silently pointed at the passenger seat of his little truck. Where he took him was a paddy that had lain fallow for over ten years.「やるなら、ここだ」"If you're doing it, do it here." Mr Kubota said so and trod on the ridge between the fields.「あっちの田は水の抜けが悪い。 That paddy over there drains badly. The mud is too hard."
In the end, it was Mr Kubota who took charge of the preparations. The mud had to come to just below the knee, and on that he would not budge. Too deep and you cannot move, too shallow and it isn't any fun, he said. Ichimura had never imagined there was so much theory behind making mud. He turned the soil over with the tractor again and again, letting water in and watching how it settled. Ichimura fretted every day, his eyes on the weather forecast. If heavy rain were to fall the day before, the water level would have to be adjusted.
On the day, twelve teams turned up, nearly a hundred people. Many came from outside the town, so many that the car park was not big enough. Five minutes in, every one of them was covered in mud. Nobody could tell who was who, and only laughter carried across the paddy. Partway through, Mr Kubota waded in as referee. Having taken a tumble, his face and hair were covered in mud too. How very much the mud-covered eighty-year-old seemed to be enjoying himself!
After the prize-giving, Mr Kubota sat down beside Ichimura.「この田んぼに人が入ったのは、三十年ぶりだ」"It's thirty years since anyone set foot in this paddy." In the old days, he said, the whole village lined up here on rice-planting day. Children and old people alike, apparently, went into the paddy barefoot.「にぎやかなのが、田んぼには一番いい」"A bit of noise and bustle is the best thing for a paddy field." Ichimura's post came to an end that autumn. Even now, though, every June this village fills up with mud-covered laughter.
