On a narrow street in an old castle town stands a confectioner's shop that has been in the family for four generations. Its cherry-leaf cakes in spring and camellia cakes in winter are well regarded, but the shop is known for another sweet altogether. It is a fresh confection called aoume, which appears for just two weeks from the middle of June. Green plums picked in the local grove are simmered until sweet and wrapped in white bean paste. Behind the sweetness, a faint sharpness and bitterness remain. Because it is all done by hand, a hundred and fifty a day is the limit.
It was last winter that an approach came to Nakagawa, the fourth-generation owner, from a department store in the city. They wanted to carry it at regional food fairs around the country, and asked whether he could possibly make it all year round. The young buyer in charge set out his figures with great enthusiasm. Nakagawa heard him out to the end, then quietly declined.「水分が多いゆえに、この菓子は二日と持ちません」"Because of the moisture in it, this sweet doesn't keep for two days."「それに梅は、六月の二週間しかあの味になりません」"And the plums only taste like that for two weeks in June."
Shiori, his daughter, who helps in the shop, could not accept that answer. Freezing technology and transport methods are nothing like what they used to be.「やってみもしないで、断るの」"You're turning it down without even trying?" That evening, unusually, father and daughter had an argument. The next morning, Nakagawa took Shiori to the plum grove. The fruit only holds that colour for a matter of days, she was told. Even between the high branches and the low ones, he said, the fruit ripens differently.
In June, the season for aoume came round as always. On the afternoon of the tenth day, a familiar face was standing outside the shop. It was the buyer, the one who had supposedly been turned down in the winter. He had come by bullet train and local line, half a day's journey, he said. He bought two on the spot, sat down on the bench outside the shop and ate them. When he had finished, he let out a long breath.
I see. You really can't send these." With that, the buyer put forward a different proposal. Rather than sending the sweets, the maker would come to the shop floor. For two weeks only, they would be made in a corner of the store and eaten there and then.「持ち帰りは、お断りでけっこうです」"We're happy to say no to takeaway altogether." More than the takings, he said, he wanted people to know the true taste. Nakagawa was silent for a while, then bowed deeply.「そこまで考えていただいて、感謝に堪えません」"That you should think it through so far — I cannot thank you enough."
This year will be the third June the event has run. On the first morning, it has reached the point where a queue forms before the store opens. The one standing at the demonstration counter these days is Shiori. Because its season is so short, this sweet is greeted every year like something met for the first time. At last year's event, one customer is said to have remarked:「これを食べると、今年ももう半分だなと思うんです」"When I eat this, I realise the year is already half gone." Shiori has written those words on a piece of paper and pinned it to a pillar in the workroom.
