In a settlement up in the hills, a shop comes only twice a week. It is a mobile shop built onto the bed of a light truck. The driver is a man in his fifties called Mr Kai, who lives in the town below. He carries rice, vegetables, tofu, batteries, even postcards. There are twelve houses in the settlement, and sixteen people live there.
There used to be one small general store in the village. From the time its elderly owner closed it, shopping suddenly became very difficult. The bus service was cut to two runs, morning and evening. Even to visit a doctor, people have to ask a neighbour for a lift. In a place like this, a mobile shop twice a week is the very backbone of daily life.
When Mr Kai's truck climbs the slope, people are already standing at the roadside waiting. Somebody always lends a hand with opening the panel on the side of the truck bed. While the shopping goes on, ten minutes or so of standing conversation begins. Whose radishes have grown fat, who is back from hospital, and so on. In a settlement with so few people left, these ten minutes are also a gathering held twice a week.
Last winter, Mr Kai hurt his back and took two weeks off. Only then did the people of the settlement find themselves truly stuck. Three households went down to the town together through the snow to do their shopping.「あれで、みんな気がついたんですね」"That was when everyone realised." So Mr Ashida, the head of the district, looks back on it.
This spring, the settlement went to the local office to talk it over. A system that depends on Mr Kai alone will stop one day. Leaving the lives of sixteen people to one vehicle feels precarious, however you look at it. In the end, they added an arrangement with a shop in the town below to take orders by telephone. On days when Mr Kai cannot come, a young member of the shop's staff drives up instead.
Mr Kai himself, though, had a different worry. The bed of his truck was old, and it was close to failing its inspection.「今の車は、今年度を限りに引退させます」"I'm retiring this vehicle as of the end of this financial year." Saying that, Mr Kai left the people of the settlement a little anxious.
But the story had a sequel. With a grant from the local office and the settlement's own savings, arrangements for a new vehicle had already been made. In June, a newly painted white shop van came up the slope. On the side of the bed was a child's drawing of the mountain and the van. The pictures had been drawn by grandchildren who come to visit in the summer. In a place with so few people, this one vehicle is a shop, a post office and a watchful eye all at once. Mr Kai handed the key of the old truck to the district head as a keepsake.「次の車は、三十年は走らせますよ」"I'll keep the next one running for thirty years."
