プールの一年いちねん

真鍋まなべさんは去年きょねんの春はる、市しのプールに通かよい始はじめました。Last spring Mr Manabe started going to the city swimming pool.孫まごと海うみで泳およぐのが、小ちいさい目標もくひょうでした。Swimming in the sea with his grandson was his small goal.初はじめの日ひは、水みずの中なかを歩あるくだけでやめました。On the first day he only walked in the water and then stopped.息の仕方が分からないし、足も底から離れないし、こわかったです。He did not know how to breathe, his feet would not leave the bottom, and he was frightened.

先生せんせいは、同おなじ練習れんしゅうをゆっくり続つづけさせました。His teacher had him repeat the same practice slowly.顔を水につけながら、十じゅうまで数かぞえます。With his face in the water, he counts to ten.板を持ちながら、足あしだけで進すすみます。Holding a float, he moves forward using only his legs.三さんか月げつで、真鍋まなべさんは板なしで五メートル泳げるまでになりました。In three months Mr Manabe got to the point of swimming five metres without the float.

夏なつになると、となりのコースを小学生しょうがくせいが速はやく泳およいでいきます。When summer came, primary school children swam past quickly in the next lane.少すこしはずかしくなって、二週間にしゅうかん休やすみました。He felt a little embarrassed and took two weeks off.先生せんせいからは、電話でんわも手紙てがみも来きませんでした。No phone call and no letter came from his teacher.

秋あきのはじめ、真鍋まなべさんはまたプールに行いきました。At the beginning of autumn Mr Manabe went back to the pool.先生せんせいは「お待まちしていました」と言いっただけでした。All his teacher said was, "I have been waiting for you."その日ひから、週しゅうに二回にかいずつ通かよいました。From that day he went twice a week.十二月じゅうにがつには、休やすまずに二十五メートル泳げるまでになりました。By December he had reached the point of swimming twenty five metres without a break.

今年ことしの夏なつ、孫まごと海うみへ行いく約束やくそくをしました。This summer he has promised to go to the sea with his grandson.孫まごは泳ぐのが上手だし、海も好きだし、きっと遠とおくまで行いくでしょう。His grandson is a good swimmer and he likes the sea, so he will surely go a long way out.「おじいちゃん、ぼくに教おしえて。」"Grandad, teach me."真鍋まなべさんは、孫まごに泳およぎ方かたを教えられるまでになりました。Mr Manabe has got to the point of being able to teach his grandson how to swim.
