At the primary school Yuka's daughter attends, there is a story-reading slot in the morning. Once a week a parent goes into the classroom and reads a book for about ten minutes. At the beginning of April, the class representative rang her. They were short of people this year, she said, and would really like Yuka to take part. Yuka is no good at speaking in front of people, and would have preferred to say no.
But last year she had not managed to come in even once. Her daughter was asking her to come, too. Asked like that, she could hardly refuse to take it on.「はい、やってみます」と答えた声は、思ったより小さかった。Her voice saying “Yes, I'll give it a go” came out smaller than she expected. After she put the phone down, Yuka stood in the kitchen for a while.
On the fridge there is a printed sheet from the school. On it, the rules for the reading slot were set out briefly.「本は学校の図書室から借りること。」“Borrow the book from the school library.”「読む時間は十分以内とすること。」“Keep the reading to ten minutes or less.” Yuka went to the library and came home with three books.
In the evening, she tried reading aloud in front of her daughter.「お母さん、早すぎる。」“Mum, that's too fast.” Her daughter pointed at the pictures and told her to wait longer. For a week she read the same book every night. She read it so often that her daughter knew it by heart, so on the day she got by without looking at the book. She slept badly the night before, but she had promised, so there was no getting out of going.
When she stood at the front of the classroom, thirty children were looking at her. The first line came out so quietly that it did not sound like her own voice. Even so, when she turned to a page with a picture, the children leaned forward.「次、どうなるの。」“What happens next?” When somebody said that, the tension went out of Yuka's shoulders.
The ten minutes were over in no time. As she left the classroom, the class teacher came out into the corridor with her.「子どもたち、今日の本を図書室で借りると思いますよ。」“I think the children will be borrowing today's book from the library.” On the way home, Yuka was thinking about another book from the library. When the sheet came round for the next month's reader, Yuka wrote her own name. She felt she simply had to read that other book to them.
